Abu Dhabi, UAE : A stunning new trophy for the winner of the second Capitala World Tennis Championship has been unveiled by Capitala, the title sponsor of the award-winning event. The trophy, which is made of stainless steel and lightly dusted with a beautiful silver matte finish, is 45 cm high and weighs approximately 4 kilograms. It has been designed by Emirati artist Azza Al Qubaisi, and produced under her brand Arjmst, which she founded in 2003.
The 2010 trophy is a beautiful hand-crafted piece that has been designed with the uniqueness of the event in mind and inspired by the deep-rooted traditions, culture and hospitality of the UAE as it embraces sports and culture. The pentagonal shape fans open towards the top to symbolize this ‘openness’. It features Arabic calligraphy that showcases title sponsor Capitala and the host venue Zayed Sports City, which this year will again see six of the world’s top players competing, including world number one and two Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Azza Al Qubaisi, who took over one month to design and complete the trophy, said:
"It is a great honour for me to have been asked to design and sponsor the trophy for this prestigious event. The tournament is an important one for Abu Dhabi, showcasing our city on a global scale - the trophy encapsulates the sense of celebration and community surrounding the Capitala World Tennis Championship."
Heang Fine Wong, CEO of Capitala, added:
"The trophy is a key component of any tournament and we were keen to work with local designer Azza Al Qubaisi right from the beginning. Her work takes inspiration from Abu Dhabi and its stunning landscapes, and also encompasses her love for the nation."
Born in Abu Dhabi 1978, Azza Al Qubaisi is UAE’s leading jewellery designer and maker. Azza graduated from London Guildhall University 2002, B.A. Jewellery Design Silversmithing and Allied Crafts, and is continuing her M.A in cultural and creative industries in HCT-CERT Abu Dhabi.
She has held several exhibitions in various locations in the UAE as well as key cities across the world, including London and Helsinki. She is a pioneer in her own right as a UAE national woman representing the country in the international arena of art and culture.
The Capitala World Tennis Championship will be staged at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex, Zayed Sports City from December 31, 2009 – December 2nd, 2010.
