Abu Dhabi, UAE: Andy Murray was today crowned the winner of the inaugural Capitala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.

The British World Number Four battled through James Blake and Roger Federer to earn himself a place in the final against World Number 1 Rafael Nadal.  He won the match 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

The Capitala World Tennis Championship was Abu Dhabi’s first major tennis tournament, and attracted a record number of guests from across the nation and GCC, completely selling out.  As well as the superb action on court there was a range of family activities at the Tennis Village outside the stadium, with regular player autograph sessions and fun activities for families.

John Lickrish, MD of Flash, commented: "The Abu Dhabi World Tennis Championship is without doubt one of our most exciting initiatives to date.  As the first international tennis event in Abu Dhabi, it is a key part of the city’s emergence as a sport and leisure destination."

Peter Wilding, Deputy CEO at Capitala, commented: "Our strategy to integrate sport and healthy lifestyle has been validated by the overwhelming success of this tournament, and coaching clinics.  We’ve been lucky enough to spend some time with all the players whilst they were here for the tournament and there’s no doubt that tennis is in great shape.  We wish them good luck in Australia and look forward to welcoming them back again in Abu Dhabi for the 2010 Capitala World Tennis Championship"

Andy Murray commented: "Nadal and I both fought hard and in good spirit.  When we play in the Australia Open next week, I know now that I’ll be able to beat him in a tight match.  The crowd was obviously really enjoying the event - the turn-out, atmosphere and media coverage has been amazing. The hospitality here has been amazing - Emirates Palace is the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in!  It was an awesome way to start the year."
